After the Storm: Answering the Call in the Wake of Typhoon Yagi

The Vietnamese countryside, usually a picture of tranquility, was transformed into a scene of chaos as Typhoon Yagi unleashed its fury. Rushing waters swept away homes, while families desperately clung to their children, navigating flooded streets in search of safety. This relentless storm left a trail of destruction across Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos, prompting urgent calls for assistance from devastated communities.

At Gebirah, a Singapore-based humanitarian organization, we are dedicated to supporting those affected by conflicts and disasters. As friends from these impacted regions reach out for help, we are preparing to deploy to Vietnam and Laos in the coming months to provide assistance where it is needed most.

The Hidden Impact of Typhoon Yagi

Typhoon Yagi has taken a staggering toll, claiming over 500 lives across Southeast Asia. But the statistics tell only part of the story. Nearly six million children have been affected, many losing access to education and clean water. In Vietnam, the worst-hit area, over 850 schools and more than 550 health centers have been severely damaged. Currently, approximately 3 million people in Vietnam lack access to basic health and safety services.

In response to this urgent need, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) have dispatched three aircraft filled with essential supplies, including blankets, hygiene kits, water filters, and meal packs, to the disaster zones.

As a member organization of Caritas Humanitarian Aid & Relief Initiatives (Singapore), (CHARIS) who contributed to the aid supplies sent, Gebirah is proud of CHARIS’ swift support for those who need help.

While these immediate efforts are commendable, the road to long-term recovery will require sustained support from the global community. The floods and landslides have heightened the risk of disease outbreaks, making access to clean water and sanitation a top priority.

Moving Forward Together

The recovery journey will be long, but Gebirah stands in solidarity with the people of Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos. We invite partners, collaborators, and volunteers to join us in this mission. Together, we can help rebuild lives and ensure that no one is left behind in the wake of Typhoon Yagi.

Would you like to be part of this journey? Let’s make a difference, together.
